The flames welcome guests and create a warm atmosphere
When entering Hotel Fýri in Hemsedal, the first impression is unforgettable: a large open fireplace in the lobby, where dancing flames welcome guests and create the warm atmosphere that the entire ESS Group is known for. But behind the cozy ambiance lies a technical challenge. A fireplace that stretches across four floors must function optimally despite ventilation systems, kitchen hoods, open doors around the clock, and extreme outdoor temperature variations ranging from +20°C to -25°C.
The hotel needed a solution that would ensure stable chimney draft under all conditions – not only in the main lobby fireplaces, but also in the lounge and relaxation areas, the spa department, and the in-house restaurant with après-ski and pizza baking. The requirement was simple: the flames should be just as reliable as they are atmospheric.
By installing specially adapted chimney fans and intelligent control systems, the project not only achieved the required draft stability but also prevented smoke spillage and odor problems in the hotel’s communal areas. The result: guests can enjoy the beautiful flames and unique ambiance – completely undisturbed.

Hotel Fýri, located in Hemsedal, is one of the group’s flagship properties, known as “the mountain resort.” Guests are welcomed by a unique combination of luxury, relaxation, and adventure, set against the dramatic backdrop of Norwegian nature. Fýri is especially well known for its atmospheric lobby featuring a prominent fireplace, as well as its lounge areas, spa facilities, and restaurants – all of which use fireplaces to elevate the guest experience.
For ESS Group, it’s about more than just comfort – it’s about creating memorable spaces where guests feel both at home and inspired. That’s why stable and reliable fireplaces are a key part of the hotel’s identity.
Solution specifications
The chimney fans always operate optimally – regardless of wind conditions
To meet the wide range of needs at Hotel Fýri, a total of five chimney fans were installed – each one carefully selected and configured for its specific fireplace or appliance. The combination of various fan models and control systems ensures optimal performance in all setups – whether it’s a large lobby fireplace, a pizza oven, or a tunnel-style fireplace in the spa.
Overview of the solution:
- Main lobby fireplaces: RSV016 with EBC10 draft control – automatically adjusts chimney draft based on conditions.
- Annex building (restaurant and après-ski): RS014 controlled with Xzense – allows for manual adjustment as needed.
- Relaxation area: RSV014 controlled with EFC16 – a simple and efficient control solution.
- Spa area: RSV012 for a tunnel-style fireplace, controlled with Xzense.
- Pizza oven: RSHT012, controlled with EBC10 draft control.
The automation is a critical part of the system. It ensures that the chimney fans always operate optimally, regardless of wind conditions, building ventilation, or outdoor temperatures. Staff don’t need to worry about the technical aspects – the controls ensure that fireplaces and ovens run smoothly, improving both operational reliability and guest experience.
Overall, the solution is a strong example of how various fan models and controls can be combined in a flexible way to support complex hotel environments with multiple fireplaces and changing operating conditions.

The implementation at Hotel Fýri was carried out in close collaboration with the hotel’s operations team to ensure that the solution matched both the technical requirements and the aesthetic surroundings. All five chimney fans were installed on their respective flues and commissioned with matching control units, ensuring optimal operation from day one.
A particular focus was placed on ensuring ease of use for staff. With EBC10 draft control and automatic regulation, even complex conditions can be managed without any manual intervention. For those staff who prefer more flexibility, Xzense allows chimney draft to be adjusted easily at the touch of a button.
The result is clear: no smoke spillage, no odor issues – just beautiful flames and the inviting atmosphere that ESS Group wants to offer its guests. The solution has enhanced the overall experience for both staff and visitors while also improving operational safety and efficiency.
