“The collaboration was professional. Changes during the project phase were handled with flexibility.
– Josef Glaser, Head of Technical Department – Silgan Metal Packaging GmbH
Even the coordination with the installer we had contracted ourselves was carried out smoothly, without requiring any involvement from our side.”

project description
Efficient heat recovery with a short payback period and high impact
At Silgan Metal Packaging in Mitterdorf, Austria, we delivered a high-performance heat recovery solution that transforms exhaust energy from a metal coating line into valuable heating power – without disrupting production. With rising energy costs and strict emission targets, Silgan was looking for a way to significantly reduce both fuel consumption and environmental impact.
We designed and implemented a fully integrated system tailored to Line 1 of their metal coating operation. By capturing high-temperature exhaust gases (up to 260°C) from the regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO), the system now delivers between 260 kW and 320 kW of recovered thermal energy – converted into 80°C hot water ready for reuse within the facility.
This approach not only cuts heating costs but directly supports site certification and long-term energy resilience. With a return on investment expected within just 1–2 years, the solution delivers both immediate savings and a strong strategic impact for Silgan’s operations in Mitterdorf.

the customer
Global packaging manufacturer with a focus on efficiency and responsibility
Silgan Metal Packaging is a global leader in the production of high-quality metal containers, serving demanding sectors such as food, fish, chemicals, and decorative packaging. Known for its focus on durability, hygiene, and sustainability, Silgan’s solutions play a vital role in protecting and preserving products around the world.
At their site in Mitterdorf, Austria, Silgan operates modern production lines that require significant thermal energy. As part of the company’s ongoing commitment to efficiency and environmental responsibility, Silgan continuously invests in technologies that reduce emissions and operating costs – without compromising on quality or performance.

solution specifications
Comprehensive solution with high performance and minimal disruption
Till linje 1 hos Silgan levererade vi ett komplett värmeåtervinningssystem, särskilt konstruerat för att utnyttja Til For Silgan’s Line 1, we delivered a complete heat recovery system engineered to harness the high energy potential from the exhaust stream of the thermal oxidiser. With exhaust temperatures reaching approximately 260°C and an airflow of around 10,000 Nm³/h, the available energy was substantial – and ideal for reuse.
The system is built around a combination of high-performance components:
- 2 x BP1000
- 2 x CFIR500
- 3 x DM500
Together, these units enable the recovery of up to 320 kW of thermal energy, which is converted into hot water at 80°C. This hot water is then made available for space heating and other support processes within the facility – particularly valuable during the winter months.
To ensure seamless integration with Silgan’s production setup, we managed the entire process from a single source. This included the redesign and modification of the chimney, coordination with external installers and electricians, and final commissioning – all without interfering with day-to-day operations.

Handover and results
Over 2,000 MWh of recovered energy – delivered with precision and partnership
From planning to commissioning, the entire project at Silgan was marked by precision, collaboration, and efficiency. By managing all aspects of the installation – including chimney modification, mechanical and electrical integration – we ensured a smooth and coordinated process from day one.
One of the most significant achievements is the measurable result: more than 2,000 MWh of energy has already been recovered – energy that previously came at a high financial and environmental cost. This recovered heat is now actively supporting site heating needs and contributing to Silgan’s ongoing efforts in certification and location security.
